Bringing Advanced Ultrasound Technologies to the EUS Physician

Electronic Radial Technology for Diagnostic EUS

Olympus and ALOKA have developed the world’s first 360° electronic radial scanning echoendoscopes providing panoramic imaging for complete visualisation of the digestive organ.  By utilising an electronic array this endoscope design provides access to advanced imaging options including Contrast Harmonic Echo as well as full Doppler functionality which aids orientation in the pancreato-biliary region.

The innovative endoscope design includes an integrated lens cleaning facility and offers a wide angulation range contributing to the superior handling characteristics that are a hallmark of Olympus endoscopes.

A Choice of Instruments for Interventional Procedures

Electronic convex scanning echoendoscopes facilitate advanced ultrasound guided interventional procedures ranging from fine-needle aspiration (FNA), to pancreatic pseudo-cyst drainage and beyond.  Doppler capabilities, including ALOKA’s proprietary eFlow technology, make it easy to interpret blood flow conditions.  The tight radius of the convex array facilitates smooth insertion whilst a wide 180° scanning angle ensures comprehensive imaging of all structures surrounding the region of interest.

Endoscopic ultrasonography guided fine-needle aspiration is fast becoming one of today’s most effective diagnostic techniques, offering assistance in the staging and tissue acquisition of malignant disease, including esophageal, pancreatic, gastric and colorectal cancer, through mediastinal nodal involvement, and the assessment of benign disease, such as chronic pancreatitis, choledocholithiasis, (common bile duct stones) and gallstones. The inclusion of  Olympus’ forceps elevator design allows fine-tuning of needle placement once the scope position is fixed, assuring more accurate puncture of the target.

The option of large channel instruments ensures compatibility with a wide range of ultrasound guided therapeutic procedures in and around the gastric tract such as stent placement for pancreatic pseudo-cyst drainage.

Ultrasonic Bronchoscope for Real-Time EBUS-TBNA

In comparison to conventional Trans-Bronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA) or mediastinoscopy, the combination of high reliability and minimum invasiveness is expected to make Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) guided TBNA  the biopsy method of choice for more accurate diagnosis and staging of lung cancer.

With a compact tip of 6.2mm and a maximum insertion diameter of 6.9mm Olympus’ ultrasonic bronchoscope design incorporates an ultra compact convex array providing clear visualisation of a dedicated 22G aspiration needle under ultrasound imaging, confirming the position of the needle tip during TBNA procedures.  A wide frequency range ensures exceptional image quality whilst access to full Doppler facilities allows blood flow conditions to be checked before puncturing.
