Flow Mediated Dilatation (FMD)
FMD - Endothelial Function Assessment
Endothelial dysfunction is considered to be the first stage of atherosclerosis. FMD analysis is generally known as an effective means to evaluate endothelial dysfunction non-invasively and said to be useful for early detection of atherosclerosis and determining the efficacy of treatment.
Clinical Usefulness of FMD Examination:
- Early assessment of atherosclerosis
Endothelial dysfunction is considered to be the first stage of atherosclerosis. Detection at this stage can help to decrease or prevent progression of atherosclerosis.
- Determining efficacy of treatment
FMD can be used as an index for evaluating the improvement of endothelial function after treating risk factors through exercise, diet and medication. Some researchers have reported that FMD can be improved by treatment with medicines for hypertension and hyperlipidemia, estrogens, vitamin E, and vitamin C.
Clinical Images
The FMD analysis can continually record and plot the whole processes from baseline through occlusion and vasodilatation to recovery, assuring that the true vasodilatation peak will never escape detection. Percent FMD an other parameters are automatically and immediately calculated after the recording is complete.
